This week I talk to artist Lea Kalisch about the freedoms and challenges that come with being an artist entrepreneur who has designed her own unique career.

Lea and I talk about what the freedom to be yourself really looks like as a creator and how she was forced into carving her own unique path as an artist, writer and producer after many rejections for not fitting into the common casting types.

She talks about the importance of being willing to fail and how sharing her failures with her audience has been a key piece to connect with them amidst her diverse content, designed around the many types of performance she loves to include such as rap, salsa, singing, and a multitude of languages.

Lea Kalisch is a Swiss-born NYC-brewed polyglot actress, singer, songwriter, dancer, and teaching artist currently residing in Minneapolis. Lea digs into her Jewish roots, but also mixes and clashes other cultures, languages and disciplines. She created her own multi-lingual one-woman show In Love With A Dream! where she blends Yiddishkayt with Latino flavor and New York swag. Lea has performed Yiddish solo concerts in America and Europe, and starred in multiple Yiddish productions Off-Broadway (God of Vengeance, Awake and Sing!). Most recently she was seen in the movie The Vigil. Throughout Covid Lea has entertained audiences with various musical programs on Zoom alongside her boyfriend Rabbi T. In 2020 she garnered attention with her debut music video Eshet Chayil of Hip Hop, a feminist update on the ancient Jewish song Eshet Chayil, clashing two opposing worlds: Hip hop and Hasidism. Her next music video will come out June 9th 2021—so stay tuned.
